Sequential Circuits Six Trak Stack Mode Sound

video upload by Rush Sound Design

"One of the best features of the Six Trak is the Stack Mode (the ability to stack 6 different sounds to make it a six voice mono monster synth). Not many videos out there showing off this feature, so i thought i'd make a demo (short and sweet) with one of my favourite stack sounds.

The six sounds on this particular one have the same tone, but they have different tunings (voices 1,2,3 are the same, voices 4 and 5 tuned a fifth higher, voice 6 a 4th higher). The result is a very rich and powerful lead sound.

Software effects used - Soundtoys Super Plate and Roland Juno 60 chorus
The backing percussion is from the Roland V Synth."

Oberheim Introduces OB-X8 Desktop Analog Synth Module

You might remember Oberheim mentioning they had something new coming to this year's Superbooth.

Here it is. The OB-X8 Desktop Module. Be sure to click the pics for the full size shots.

Press release follows:

Oberheim Announces OB-X8 Desktop Analog Synth Module Fits Perfectly into Your Studio, Your Music, Your Life

San Francisco, CA — Oberheim today announced the much-anticipated desktop version of their highly acclaimed OB-X8 eight-voice analog synthesizer, which faithfully recreates sounds from the classic Oberheim OB-X, OB-Xa and OB-8 synthesizers of the eighties. And now all its presets, synthesis features, and sound editing controls are available in a compact package that fits everyone’s creative space.

“The original OB synths were jam-packed with components and took up a lot of space. There was no way you could contemplate getting even a four-voice version of that sound out of a desktop or rack-mount unit,” mused Tom Oberheim. “Well, here we are in 2023: eight voices of our amazing OB-X8 three-in-one synthesizer now comes in a size that fits your studio.”

The new OB-X8 desktop version does not include the 61-note Fatar keyboard and expression levers found in the original, but don’t let that stop you from experiencing all the sonic power of these monster synths in a footprint that’s compact enough for studios of any size, and convenient enough to take on the road.

Just like the keyboard version, the desktop OB-X8 boasts an identical sound engine, featuring an all-analog signal path with discrete VCOs, VCAs, and filters. And it still manages to provide the same knob-per-function front panel sound designing experience, with immediate access to virtually all the synth’s parameters.

“Bringing back the Oberheim brand has been a joy,” said David Gibbons, CEO. “And since the introduction of the OB-X8 keyboard in May 2022, we’ve heard an overwhelming desire for a desktop module version catering to those whose free studio space doesn’t quite match their enthusiasm for unique synth sounds.”

In the hands of such luminaries as Prince, Van Halen, and Herbie Hancock, Oberheim synths were more than just instruments, they provided the soundtrack of an era. Now a whole new generation of artists are discovering their voices through OB-X8. “When I was shown the new OB-X8, I was immediately impressed with the forensic level of detail that went into its design and the respect for its lineage,” said Trent Reznor, the creative force behind Nine Inch Nails, and an Academy Award-winning composer. “I’m excited more people will be able to experience this classic instrument.”

OB-X8 desktop module weighs approximately 9 lbs. 9 oz. (4.34 kg) and measures 22.00” L x 8.50” W x 4” H (55.88 cm x 21.59 cm x 10.16 cm).

The OB-X8 desktop module is available for pre-order now, with a US MAP price of $3,499. Shipping worldwide in June.

Sequential Pro 3 - Fundamentals Sound Sets 1 and 2 - 128 Custom Patches

Creative Spiral

Note the above is a playlist of Sequential Pro 3 videos by Creative Spiral including some on sound design. The following is the description for the first video.

"Two custom designed sound sets for the Pro 3 synthesizer. This video previews about half the patches from both sets. Available now on Sellfy: https://sellfy.com/sounddesign/p/pro3...

0:00 - Set 1: Basses, Leads, Classic Synth
17:52 - Set 2: Strings, Brass, Keys, Paraphonic

128 custom patches for the Sequential Pro 3 synthesizer.

There are many patches inspired by famous songs in this set, including artists like Pink Floyd, Vangelis, Rush, Journey, Boards of Canada, Parliament Funkadelic, Nena, Nine Inch Nails, Queen, The Cars, and more.

In this video demo, a total of sixty three patches are shown. There is also another sixty five more patches included in the combined two sets that are not shown in this demo.

Fundamentals Set 1:
Basses, Leads, and Synth Classics (64 patches)
There is a total of 26 Bass Patches, 22 Lead Patches, and 16 Classic Synth Patches in Set 1. The patch prefixes indicate their intended primary usage, however, most of the basses can double as lead tones, and vice versa - most leads in this set make great sounding basses. I've done my best to optimize patches to sound great up and down the keybed.

Fundamentals Set 2:
Strings, Brass, Keys, Plucks, Organs and Paraphonic Sounds (64 patches)
There is a total of 9 Brass Patches, 6 String Patches, 13 Key/Pluck Patches, 8 Piano and Organ Patches, and 25 Paraphonic Patches in Set 2. Lots of great plucks and synth staples, plus the twenty five paraphonic patches give you a ton of harmonic possibilities to explore. The Pro 3 paraphonic mode is very cool, and can provide unique harmony sounds different than polyphonic synths."

Native Instruments releases three MASSIVE X Expansions

"The first ever MASSIVE X Expansions coincide with a limited time offer on Native's flagship synth

Berlin, April 23rd, 2020 – Native Instruments today releases its first three MASSIVE X Expansions; RUSH, PULSE, and SCENE.

Each Expansion contains 150 presets for the synth tailored toward a certain sound, created by expert sound designers who were involved in the development of MASSIVE X and the creation of its factory library.

Made for producers, composers, and musicians, MASSIVE X Expansions provide fundamental, professional sound design for those who need a certain sound, and can be endlessly tweaked, patched, and rewired for those who want to take things further.

RUSH sees dancefloor-focused, melodic leads and pads come to the fore – ranging from complex and shifting patches to cutting, front-and-center sounds.

PULSE is oriented toward bass patches – from the contemporary, edgy sounds indigenous to its digital architecture, to forward-thinking takes on low-end classics.

SCENE is geared towards soundscapes, textures, and atmospheres, and exploits MASSIVE X’s versatility.

Native is celebrating the launch by offering all three Expansions for the price of two. Anybody who has so far slept on MASSIVE X can upgrade or buy it with a $50 discount, and will additionally get RUSH, PULSE, and SCENE for free. The special offer is available until May 10th, 2020."

Yamaha - pulse - Milan Design Week 2019 report

Published on Aug 25, 2019 Yamaha_Global

"Video reports from the 'pulse – Milan Design Week 2019' event at which we exhibited in April 2019.

We welcomed over 27,000 visitors over a six day period, the most of any of the design exhibitions outside Japan in which we have participated.
Thank you very much for coming to see us.

https://www.yamaha.com/en/about/desig..."

"Exhibition Concept

Yamaha Design Laboratory makes a return to Milan Design Week—one of the world’s largest design-related events—for the first time in 11 years. The Laboratory’s exhibition, titled pulse, will feature four sound-related installations that highlight the pleasure found within complex mental and physical states.

For four years, from 2005 to 2008, Yamaha Design Laboratory presented designs showcasing the Yamaha world view at Milan Design Week. Directly experiencing the responses of attendees from around the world helped the Laboratory to further develop its design philosophy and more clearly define the identity of Yamaha design. Now, for the first time in 11 years, the Laboratory will once again participate in the event, exhibiting four new designs that showcase Yamaha’s world view.

For the theme of the exhibition, the Laboratory chose pulse, a word that expresses the beating of the heart, the rush of excitement, and by extension our emotions. Through its design of musical instruments and more, Yamaha has made an impact on the pulse of its customers by offering a richness that is complex and full of contradictions: the differing perspectives of the players and the audience, the difficulty and enjoyment that come with practice, or the feeling of oneness with one’s instrument when absorbed in a performance.
Further refining the appeal to the pulse of the performers, creators and listeners, this exhibition will feature four designs that each offer an experience that is uniquely captivating. These experiences will make the heart race by highlighting the pleasure found within complex mental and physical states for which a word as simple as "emotions" falls short."

StyloBuzz MkII - Stylus Synth

Published on Apr 19, 2019 Rarebeasts

via Rare Beasts on Etsy

"The StyloBuzz MkII is a small stylus synth that allows you to design loops and then play them on a keyboard shifting the sound as you go.

Sounds are made by playing notes on the keyboard, but if you want you can record a noise loop that will be played and repeated as you hit each key. Just place the stylus on the first key to enter loop mode.

It's so simple to play, the minimalist design means it super easy to make awesome sounds, no need to rush for a 200 page instruction manual to play this instrument.

The StyloBuzz has 4 main controls;

* The keyboard: press the stylus on any part of the keyboard to play a note, it's not fixed to any key and just represents a range of sounds.

* The speed control: this knob adjusts the speed at which the loop is repeated. It gets faster a you increase frequency making some very weird noises at the top.

* The frequency control: Normally the speed control but becomes the frequency control when the lowest note is played with the stylus, entering loop mode.

* The third control is the write button, when pressed in loop mode it writes a sound to memory which is then replayed next time the loop is run.

The output is via a 3.5mm stereo socket which can be plugged into earphones, a computer sound card, mixer or amplifier.

Stats:
Output: 3.5mm socket (Use with earphones, a computer sound card, mixer or amplifier)
Power: USB (Plug into a computer, phone charger or wall socket). No internal battery."

The Prophet - 153 Combinator Patches for Propellerhead Reason. Prophet 5 Thor

Published on Jun 13, 2018 Rush Sound Design

"This is a collection of 153 combinator patches for Propellerhead Reason, taking inspiration from the classic Prophet 5 analogue synth (this is a selection of some of the sounds - no external effects used).

Some vintage analogue sounds can be found here – punchy basses and plucks, lush pads, classic keys, soaring leads, effects, percussive and the classic Sync and FM sounds of the Prophet 5 poly-mod section. The poly-mod section allows for amazing sweeping effects, wild noises, and various frequency modulation type sounds that famously attribute to the Prophet’s signature sound.

The Thor syntheisizer is the sound generator here, generally consisting of a pair of analogue oscillator modules, low-pass filter and lfo to keep it simple and true to the original. The modulation matrix was used to emulate the poly-mod section on the Prophet 5. There is also a unison mode for those BIG sounds.

Each sound is performance oriented, so the modulation wheel and aftertouch are routed to a parameter to change in real time – experiment to find out which! The four rotary knobs on the Combinator front panel (see below) are routed to different parameters specific to each patch. There is also a switch for delay on/off.

This collection costs £11.99 (pounds). Please send payment to markrushbury@yahoo.com via paypal. Once i receive payment i will email the download link to you. If you have any queries, please contact me at markrushbury@yahoo.com"

Oberheim OB-X

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

via this auction

"This OB-X is the 4-voice model in top condition and with very minor wear given its age. This synth sounds fantastic, everything works as it should and is very stable. I had it serviced about 2 years ago by a former Oberheim employee. Service included recapping of the power supply, replacing OS chips, renew some of the old cables, and adding new key bushings. I also had him retrofit it with the ElectronGate MIDI kit.

The Oberheim OB-X is the rarest of the entire OB-series and touted by many (including Tom Oberheim himself) as the best sounding model of the OB series, which is due to its all discrete components (except for the envelopes, for which it uses CEM3310 chips) and the SEM-based design used in the earlier Oberheim Two- and Four Voice synths. Only 800 Oberheim OB-Xs were manufactured and it is estimated that an even smaller number of them are alive today in fully working condition.

Furthermore, the OB-X is THE synth behind legendary sounds, such as the haunting pad sound in Killing Joke's "Love Like Blood", the intro reso-sweep sound in Rush's "Tom Sawyer", the entire Queen "Flash Gordon" soundtrack, Nena's "99 Luftballons", and of course Van Halen's "Jump" (the list goes on)."

Moog Taurus III Discontinued?

This one I do not have confirmation on. It came in on an email list via this link. BTW, I wouldn't sub to that list until we have confirmation. I'm not seeing mention of it on Moog Music Inc Facebook, and their Taurus page is up. I'm checking in with a couple of people at Moog and will post back. Note the date on this page is 6/6/12. It's 6/8/12 so something seems fishy. We'll see.

Update: I heard back from Moog and this is legit. Another notch in synth history. Word is the Taurus III was introduced as a limited set of 1000 units. Due to popular demand an additional 500 were made. 1500 units exist.

"6/06/12 Asheville, NC Moog Music today announced the end of production of the Taurus 3 Bass Pedals. The synthesizer company plans to build the final instruments this week and then forever close the production line. The Taurus 3 Bass Pedals have a nearly four-decade legacy and without the passion of Moog’s dedicated customers, these storied instruments would never have come to be.

Mike Adams, Moog Music President & CEO, explains the history, “After years of requests from our loyal customers to reissue the original Taurus 1 Bass Pedals, we realized we needed to do it, but simply did not have the resources. In order to fund the research and development, we asked those same loyal customers to pre-order 250 pieces. Thanks to their passion and dedication to Moog, by the end of that month we had over 250 pieces pre-ordered! In 2007 our engineering team, led by Cyril Lance, began work on the new Taurus 3.”

The Taurus 3 Bass Pedals were released in 2009 as a limited production reissue of the legendary Taurus 1. The Taurus 3 captured the classic sound and look of the Taurus 1, while improving on its functionality. Taurus 3 owners include Rush, The Black Keys, Animal Collective, Jean Michel Jarre, Yes, Weezer, and The Dave Matthews Band.

“It's been a great run and I want to thank all of you who, sight unseen, had the faith that we could design a product that you would covet. It's a special piece for a unique musician,” said Adams. “With the announcement that we will no longer be manufacturing this product, we are also announcing a new firmware release that improves performance and adds new user requested features. "

Extremely limited quantities of The Taurus 3 Bass Pedals are still available at stocking dealers.

The Taurus family of synthesizers lives on through Moog’s latest tabletop synthesizer, the Minitaur Analog Bass Synthesizer. For more information on this addition to the Taurus family of synthesizers go to: Moogmusic.com/minitaur."

BeatBOX controller config Demonstration

"i use my non-existent beatboxing skills to take the alpha beatbox controller software through its paces."

via http://www.indiegogo.com/beatjazzsystem:

My name is Onyx Ashanti. I am an artist/invetor living in Berlin. I have spent the last few years working on a new way to combine improvisation, dance and sound design and i call it Beatjazz. I did my first crowdfunding campaign back in january to, as we put it, "Create the most amazing live music performance system, ever!". And with that campaign, the beatjazz controller was born and it has gone caused a bit of a buzz by way of a fortuitous TED talk presentation and an upcoming feature in MAKE magazine to present it to the world as an open source project.

The project excited the imaginations of thousands of people who shared this vision of "A" future of electronic music. and along the way much was learned! for instance, I only discovered after the controller was built, that the system was so ammenable to performance from the dance floor, within the crowd! further, i have discovered that when a performer has the narrative capacity of their body to make use of, it changes the conveyed message instantly and profoundly.

So, armed with this newfound knowledge from having played the prototype controller for the past 5 months, I feel it is time to build the system properly and fully.

I present the Beatjazz performance system.

A complete live performance architecture designed to enable completely immersive live electronic performance. it represents the intersection of hardware, software and concept."
